When Marie Kondo’s book, “The LifeChanging Magic of Tidying”, came out, people were quick to embrace the “KonMari” method of decluttering. If you spend any time on social media, you probably saw plenty of posts from friends who were intent on following the method and ridding themselves of possessions that didn’t spark joy in their lives. When Netflix brought the method to television screens, the show was an instant hit, and thrift stores around the country are reporting increased donations during a time of year that’s typically slow. If you’re planning to apply the KonMari method to your home, though, you might want to consider renting a dumpster.

The Marie Kondo method might seem simple at first glance. First, you divide your belongings into categories of clothes, books, papers, miscellany, and mementos. Divide these categories into subcategories, and then keep only those items which spark joy. You pick each item up and consider how it makes you feel, before deciding if it stays. Once this process is completed, decide where everything goes and organize your space. The final rule of KonMari is perhaps the most difficult one: do it all in one go. The theory is that when you complete this process all at once, you can dramatically change your mindset.

If you follow through with this, though, where does all of the stuff go? There will be things that you gift to others and things that you donate to charity, but what about all the rest of it? If you declutter a little at a time, as most of us do, you can take out a bag or two of trash each week in addition to your regular garbage. If, however, you commit to getting rid of everything that doesn’t spark joy all at once, you may be talking about bags upon bags of detritus.

With a dumpster rental, this is no problem. You can immediately remove all the trash from your living space, and see the progress you’re making as you go along. Renting a dumpster makes it easier to commit to the process because once the items are out of your house, there’s no temptation to pull things out of the dumpster and reincorporate them into your life.
