A Tree Just Fell on My Roof. What Should I Do Now?
When storms blow through, one risk homeowners face is falling trees. If a tree falls on your home, the steps you take in the aftermath can not only protect your family but also contain the damage to your home. One of your first steps in recovering from the damage is renting a dumpster for the cleaning process. If a tree falls on your roof, take these steps to get your home back to normal.
Get Out of the Home
Once a tree falls on your roof, it may not be safe to stay in your house. Unless severe weather is still occurring and you have no other shelter, get out of the house to reduce the risk of injury from falling debris and other hazards. If you cannot leave the home immediately, get off upper floors to the lowest level and as far away from the tree as you can. Be mindful of fallen wires outside, which may still be live. Call for help if you are trapped in your home.
Call Your Insurance Company
Notify your insurance company as soon as you can, so you can start the restoration process. Your insurance company will advise you on the steps you need to take next, including making arrangements for tree removal and dumpster rentals. If it is safe to enter your home, your insurance company may advise you to use a tarp to protect your property, if possible.
Arrange for Repairs
You will need to rent a dumpster, hire a tree removal company, and hire roof repair company to make repairs on your home. For safety reasons, allow professionals to complete the repair services. Be sure your insurance company approves the companies you choose.
